Before the 2016 Startup Europe Summit, we toured Europe, sparking vital tech policy discussions in cities like Berlin, Warsaw, and Lisbon. In partnership with the European Commission and German Marshall Fund, we turned these insights into a powerful white paper, revealed at the Summit.
Leading up to the 2016 Startup Europe Summit, Factory hosted events across Europe to learn and report on the challenges and opportunities in policy for tech communities. This included vibrant ecosystems like Berlin, Warsaw, Amsterdam, Lisbon, and Milan.
The European tech policy roadshow was hosted in partnership with the European Commission and the German Marshall Fund. The activity resulted in presenting learnings and findings at the Startup Europe Summit event in Berlin in a white paper produced alongside the German Marshall Fund.
A key goal was to involve local and member state government administrators to sync grassroots efforts with those of the Commission.
The roadshow included a mix of conference events and more intimate dinners with notable founders, tech companies, and policymakers from each tech hub. Guests and attendees ranged from prominent investors, founders, corporate executives and policymakers.
Shared challenges across Europe centered around three themes: scaling challenges across Europe, access to diverse funding sources and transatlantic data transfer issues.
Results:
The main goal of the roadshow was to connect European Commission decision-makers with what was happening on the ground in tech ecosystems across Europe. As such, the aim was to have a top-down approach meet one that was bottom-up.
The series successfully gathered a diverse set of stakeholders: from academia, investment, corporates and the startup sector. Doing this locally across five key European ecosystems resulted in inputs from over 400 participants.
The roadshow provided a framework for both the Startup Europe Summit event in Berlin, gathering all these stakeholders together in one place, as well as the policy whitepaper launched at the event.
