First, a bit about the Startup Europe Summit (SES). SES convenes entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, and corporates to discuss policy frameworks that support and hinder the European innovation ecosystem. Launched initially as a conference, we set out to do a little bit more – to showcase EU success stories and projects stimulating tech and startup growth.
It was back in 2015 when the European Commission approached us with a seemingly impossible task: to plan a conference gathering the European tech community with the two newly elected Digitial Commissioners, all within six weeks. But we did it.
We hosted the inaugural event in Berlin in 2015, featuring keynote talks, a startup fair, and private meetings. Key speakers included European Commissioners and industry leaders.
And in the following years, we worked closely with the European Commission. SES saw next editions in 2016, 2018, and 2019, all in different European cities. The Summits focused on technology leadership, ecosystem funding, and strengthening startup environments. Notably, the 2019 summit in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, organized as a part of the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU, the aim was to reinforce Central and Eastern European ecosystems, showcase Cluj and Romania as startup hubs, and present progress made by EU networks. Featured guests included prominent figures from the tech and investment sectors.
The event is the go-to destination for European and transatlantic founders and CEOs to meet with top EU Commissioners and policymakers.
Results:
The event included several notable outcomes. A policy white paper was released in collaboration with the German Marshall Fund, offering key recommendations to the Commission about the EU tech and startup ecosystem.
In 2016, Ricardo Marvão, CEO of Beta-i, along with EU Commissioner Carlos Moedas, announced the launch of the Portuguese Startup Manifesto. Additionally, the inaugural Startup Europe Summit, marked the first meeting of new commissioners Andrus Ansip and Gunther Oettinger, their first gathering with the EU tech community and the newly launched Startup Europe program.
In total, event efforts reached over 15 million people, with extensive media coverage in major outlets like Zeit, The Guardian, Politico, Wired, TechCrunch, and The Wall Street Journal.
