East Side Radio: Lisbon’s Gateway to Global Rhythms

Today marks the beginning of a three-part curatorial series by East Side Radio at Musicbox — featuring Jungle Julia, Dekko, and Emenda b2b Soneto, who will take the stage tonight at the club in Cais do Sodré. Notable figures like Trol2000, Mãe Dela, and Xico da Ladra are also confirmed for the events on January 16 and 23.

For those unfamiliar, East Side Radio, an initiative by Ill-Pitched, led by André Granada and Tiago Pinto, launched on December 5 and has already hosted artists like Rui Maia, DJ Glue, DarkSunn, Moullinex, Holly, and GPU Panic. Broadcasting from Lisbon, East Side Radio runs a diverse program from 2 PM to 6 PM, Monday through Friday.

Dilettante X interviewed the creators of this new project about their early steps, future plans, and the nights they call "From URL to IRL."

How did East Side Radio come about? Do you remember when the first ideas were taking shape? The idea has been in the works for over a year, and after doing a set at Red Light Radio in Amsterdam in January 2018, we became even more convinced. Throughout that year, we performed sets on a dozen similar radios in cities like London, Brussels, Paris, and Barcelona. With each set, our desire grew to see something like this work in Lisbon: an online radio with live video and audio streaming, welcoming anyone passionate about sharing music — DJs or not — from anywhere in the world, as long as they were in Lisbon.

Was it easy to bring together everyone who has collaborated on the project? Do you still feel there’s a strong community spirit in electronic music, reminiscent of its early, more grassroots days? It hasn’t been easy, but it happened naturally. Among friends, acquaintances, regular and occasional guests, it’s been a challenging but enriching experience. We even joke that it feels like programming a club open in the afternoons, five days a week.

A triangle of words that define the project: Lisbon, World, Music. What drives us is the joy of sharing records, listening to a wide range of music, and showcasing to the world what’s being created and heard in Lisbon.

How has the experience been so far, and what feedback have you received from those following your first steps? It’s been equally exhausting and rewarding. We’ve received more feedback and quicker than we expected, with daily requests from people wanting to share their collections and selections. Keeping up with 20 hours of broadcasting each week while managing other responsibilities is challenging, but it’s also surprising to see so many more people eager to showcase their music than we initially imagined, far beyond the usual club and nightlife scenes.

What are your plans for 2019? 2019 will be a year of hard work, refining details, growing steadily, meeting more like-minded people, and collaborating on projects that make sense.

Tonight, you’re kicking off the first of three nights at Musicbox. What can we expect from East Side Radio “in real life”? What fuel will you use to ignite the dance floor? We’re very excited. It was a tough choice, as we couldn’t invite everyone to share the decks, but we’re confident the music will be spot-on across the three nights. We bring the same easygoing vibe and energy that fuels our daily online sets to the dance floor.
